The Best Lighting For A Selfie
On October 2, 2019 by Rafael RyanWhy the selfie?
If you are exploring the idea of becoming influential on social-media, the selfie is the key to success. You want to create a beautiful selfie that draws eyes to you and attracts followers; achieving the perfect selfie is all about lighting. Natural lighting can be either your best friend or your enemy, you just need to understand how to harness natural light to your full advantage.
Making The Most Out Of Natural Light
The optimum location for taking a selfie, is in indirect sunlight. If you are indoors, consider taking your picture in front of a window facing the window. Avoid standing with your back to the window as light will be drawn away from you and your face will be too dark. Always face your light source.
Stand much closer to a smaller window to get the most from the light.
Things to avoid with natural light
- Standing with your back to a light-source
- Too much sunlight, will make your picture over-exposed and it will wash out all facial definition
- Shadowy and dark locations, you really don’t want shadows being cast all over your face, making for an uneven portrait
If you are in a dark location you could use the flash on your phone to eliminate any shadows being cast on your face but it isn’t the best use of natural light.
Selfie-lights
There are selfie-lights compatible with any smartphone, available to buy – the most popular are the ring light in Australia. They work in a very similar way to studio lights but are small and transportable for laptop and mobile devices. They create vibrant, shadow less portraits, ideal for making the most of your image on any social-media platform. You can adjust the brightness and they are ideal for taking a selfie at night.
To get a decent quality ring light you need to spend a bit of money, but you’ll have a great selfie with little effort.
